I think Spear I think is just a consistently really good weapon. Low stance has great mobility and flying monkey jump attack actually does solid damage and can really cause problems for human enemies. You should select your weapon based on your own playstyle, and considering whether you prefer to block, dodge, cast spells from afar, and how likely you are to remember to Ki Pulse or Flux to recover your Ki (Stamina). If you want to try a faster weapon, my favorite for those is the Kusarigama, and for heavier weapons both Odachi and the Axe are nice though require some more Ki management, especially on high stance.
